A traumatic experience activates our threat response to help protect us, but if trauma is not addressed, we can suffer lasting impacts.
JESSICA’S APPROACH
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing
EMDR therapy helps activate the brain and nervous system's healing processes, providing relief from painful memories and enabling you to move forward.
Compared to traditional talk therapy, EMDR can often resolve emotional distress, unhealthy behaviors, and deeply held beliefs tied to past trauma more efficiently.
EMDR is an evidence based approach for addressing anxiety, depression, phobias and symptoms of post-traumatic stress.
Jessica has completed both Level 1 and Level 2 EMDR training and has experience supporting both children and adults. Additionally, she has undergone training to adapt EMDR for neurodivergent individuals.
How Does EMDR Work?
-
Step 1.
We will identify the experiences that are causing you emotional or physical distress and examine and build upon the coping skills you already have.
-
Step 2.
We will do bilateral stimulation exercises, which helps you reprocess the memory in a safe way.
-
Step 3.
The memory of the distressing experience stops triggering an emotional response and your beliefs surrounding the event start to shift.
How do I know Trauma Therapy is right for me?
-
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a structured psychotherapy designed to help individuals process and integrate distressing memories and sensations. Originally developed for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), EMDR has been found effective in addressing a range of mental health concerns. These include processing traumatic memories underlying PTSD, anxiety, depression, phobias, panic disorders, grief, addictions, and relationship issues. By targeting past experiences that contribute to emotional distress, EMDR supports individuals in reducing the impact of these memories and improving their overall well-being.
-
EMDR therapy works by helping individuals process distressing memories that remain unresolved and trigger emotional or physical symptoms. During EMDR sessions, a therapist guides the individual to recall a troubling memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements, tapping, or sounds. This stimulation helps reprocess the memory, reducing its emotional charge and enabling the brain to store it in a less distressing way. Over time, this can lead to decreased symptoms and improved emotional resilience.
